Wagendrift Nature Reserve
First time - newbie post.
On our way down to the KZN Coast we usually overnight at the MountainView Inn caravan park next to the Wimpy in Harrismith.
In a recent issue of Wild Magazine the Wagendrift Nature Reserve (near Estcourt) was featured. From the pics and the description it looked like a venue worth considering as an overnight stop on the way to the KZN Coast.
Anybody stayed there before and got some feedback?
Welcome to the forum Gen.
I also added the resort to my list of possible stay overs when travelling that route again.
Looks like you will have to be our Guinea Pig.
My next trip in that direction is going to be in May.
Will report my findings
Happy camping

Mart, welcome on the forum.
Concerning Wagendrift, I know the Motorhome Club of SA, Natal region planned an outing there, I can't remember if it actually took place. I think if they had it in mind, most probably someone did visit to have a look first, and is was approved.
I think you must just make sure of camping fees, children pay extra, and most probably you will have to pay the minimum conservation fee as well, and if you 4 in total, another R60 to be added. As I see it, it may well be more than double if you are 4 people compared to MountainView Inn.
If you take that all into account, and the fact that you are 7kms out of town, to go and get some take-away is going to be costly in the end,!! Where as at Mountainview Inn, you actuallly don't even have to unhook the caravan, with numerous fast food outlets on you doorstep!! In the end, if it just for overnight, I would rather stay at Mountainview Inn!!!!
My 2c
As for a one night stop over Mointain View is perfect. Its on your route, you dont need to cook as everything is on your doorstep and you are back on the road within 5 minutes in the morning.
We went to Wagendrift a couple of years ago. Good place to camp, We were camped on the waters edge. But unless you are planning to do a couple of nights its not worth the detour for a an overnight.
It's only the two of us (my wife and myself). And I have a Wild Card which should cover conservation fees
I do agree that Mountain View is very convenient - what with all the food outlets, etc.
My only issue is the trucks droning down that hill at night! And I must admit I always feel just a little uncomfortable there from a security perspective - not that I have ever heard of anybody having security "incidents" at Mountain View
So my thinking was that on the way down, maybe Wagendrift would be better, because:
a) quieter
b) closer to our KZN destination - which means getting in a bit earlier and settling in that bit earlier.
On the way back I would still use Mountain Inn. Wagendrift is the wrong side of Van Reenen's for the journey back home.
On the other hand, my next trip down to KZN is scheduled to arrive at Salt Rock on 4th May (just as the long weekend finishes). This means overnighting at Mountain View or Wagendrift on the night of the 3rd May - the Saturday night in the middle of the long weekend.
Arriving at Wagendrift on the Saturday night of a long weekend may have some challenges with finding a site for the night.
So I am 50/50 at the moment - but remain interested in any feedback on Wagendrift - even if only for another trip when I wouldn't be travelling down over a long weekend.
Welcome on the forum Martin. This is an excellent platform to get firsthand info.
