Batwing awnings (270/360..) have been around for a while. I have tried finding, without success, some info as to what to do to prevent wind / storm damage (stormstraps or nets). To date I have used the rather thin ropes that came with the awning and have survived winds of 40kmh. I am heading to the East Coast in December and would prefer adding some additional security. As the awning has short pegs that fold out of the arms lifting  the canvas roof to assist with water flow when it rains you cannot just secure a rope or net over the roof as you would with a normal tent.

Any practical advice will be appreciated.

I would fit removable adjustable tent poles at the end of each  horizontal support of the awning.  From there secure a proper tent rope and anchor to each pole.

No the structure should be more sound and you could wrap a storm net over it.  As a storm net I use soccer goal post net because:

1. The ropes are thinner than that of a cargo net but the NET ropes all work as one.
2. The Net is not that big when folded and can be stored easily.
3. Get different sizes like hockey goal post net.
4. Warp the net tight around the tent/awning/gazebo like you would wrap a birthday present and anchor the net multiple pegs all round.  Works better than one or two anchor pin on a strap.
