Spare Wheel - to have or not to have, that is the question.
Part of my standard tool kit is a small but capable 12v compressor. I'm thinking I should add to this a puncture repair kit and pressure monitors for vehicle and caravan wheels. This is much lighter and less bulky than the spare tyre.
Please share your thoughts on this.
You must consider the condition of some of our roads these days.
We would never want to go on the road without a spare. Rather leave something else at home. Especially if you are going to be travelling full time.
I have had a tyre failure once every second year. Mostly, because the driver does not notice the tyre going flat, the tyre is a right off. The tyres were Goodyear 165/13 C (6 ply) on my Gypsey Raven. 3 years ago I fitted Hi Fly 165/13 C (8 ply) tyres and had no problems with them. I sold the caravan in March.
A good idea is to have tyre pressure monitors, an electric pump and tyre repair kit. Catch it before it is flat and fix the puncture and then pump it up again. Then you dont have expensive replacement and even repair costs.
I would never go without a spare tyre.

Jare later kamp ons by louws en een lid se hy gaan vroeg ry so 10 uur hy moet gaan werk en ek het hom langs die pad gekry so 3 uur die middag waar hy gestaan het met papwiel. So ek laai hom maar eerder.

Never had a flat tyre....... until one trip where between Natal and Mpumalanga where I had three!!! Two of the tyres needed to be replaced.
Now the minimum equipment is a spare tyre, hydraulic jack, tyre repair kit and a compressor.
As gewig die probleem is los ek eerder my vrou by die huis as spaarwiel ![]()
The Bible says: Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Proverbs 15:22
I have heard you.
Prevention is beter than cure. And I take presure monitors as part of that. But on a heavy caravan in some cases 1,5tons on only two wheel chances are that the wheel is a wright off by the time you get a safe spot to stop.
I already have all the tools and things you suggest but in the end I will never leave the spare wheel at home.
Sonder Jesus is ek niks! ! ! !
Why do Ford and others issue these wheels as standard? But I am digressing.
The spare goes with even when we camp 60 km from home. It is like insurance. A necessary evil!
At one stage while towing a Sprite Sport, I notice from my side mirror that the caravan tyre was shedding rubber. I stopped at a safe spot and found the tyre was showing bare canvas, was smoking and air was escaping. An air compressor and puncture repair kit would have been useless (even though I had this equipment on board) My spare wheel saved the day. Well done Tom for seeking advice, rather than taking a chance.
Looking on the bright side of life will never cause eye strain.

Ja this is also something to remember. That a wheel does not always go flat they could loose the thread as well. And then puncture kit and compressor will do you no good.
Thanx for pointing this out Cowen

Hi Tom...
I've got a whole heap of flat tyre recovery gear... just ask round...
Ain't no pump gonna solve this mess.. Blowout on the way to Bloemhof...
Carry the spare.... It's worth the pain... Someday...

These days a teeny-tiny bit more slightly quicker....
We have each 2 spare wheels....
