Ek is al sedert selfoon se bestaan op kontrakte. Maar sien deesdae prepaid data en lugtyd is baie goedkoper as wat ek op kontrak betaal. 

Enige nadele om kontrak te stop en oor te gaan na prepaid?

I can't remember when I last had a contract phone, they are so cheap to buy now that I can't justify the overpricing. So may ways to get pre paid like e bucks and so on and I agree, far less to buy a bundle than to pay on contract.

 I also got myself a mobile router for camping that I just buy data for, works very well and I just plan to buy before I leave.

Vodacom het 39 miljoen prepaid teen oor 6 miljoen contrak kliente.

Na ek af getree het en ek verantwoordelik geword het vir my cell foon kostes het ek ń foon gekoop en is prepaid toe.

Enigste ding/nadeel is jy moet nou en dan op top op data en voice. Ek doen dit sommer maklik op my bank se app of met USSD.

Ek het jare lank vanaf die tyd to ADSL beskibaar geword het en later tot so 'n paar jaar gelede, opties.  Ek kan nie sien dat opties vir 'n privaatgebruiker 'n opsie is nie en ek wonder of die massiewe infra-struktuur wat die diensverskaffers gebou het, nie dalk soos ADSL, 'n wit olifant gaan begin word vir die privaat verbruiker nie. Dit maak vir my nie finansiële of praktiese sin nie. Dit lyk soos slegs prakties vir grootmaatverbruikers.  

Starlink maak nie vir my sin nie.  Dis baie duur en heelemal onnodig tensy jy in 'n gebied bly waar selfoonkontak afwesig is of baie reis op sulke plekke.

Starlink has zero restrictions. Unlimited data and no throttling of data at various data limits. 

That is cheaper than what I currently pay for uncapped, with data throttling at various levels which starts at 100GB. Just one update of my OS on the laptop and I reach that level and we have two laptops and two phones. When you camp virtually permanently then those updates become an issue. What to watch some live sport while camping that also adds up. This all makes it worth while for us to go the Starlink route. We also use the same data plan when we stop at home as well no fibre contract. 

Brian, my total package cost just a bit more than the starting price of Starlink. I haven't any experience with Starlink but I am under the impression you have to set up a receiver dish. If that is similiar to setting up a DSTV dish, it probably is a bit troublesome.  I am not trying to convince you, I am just stating the situation as I see it.  I am in favour of new technology but I believe I have to judge whether such will make my life easier and consider whether the cost involved justifies the advantage you win. 

You will still need a cell phone for calls and data while not at your base, I think. 

We signed up, on a Black Friday special nogal, an Internet bundle giving us 2Tb (yep, this is nearly an uncapped level!) per month access for R495 p.m. at Vodacom. We take our router with us when we camp and it is so useful and easy, I stream TV while camping, and do not bother to set-up (and battling with finding signal) my dish anymore. Obviously, we need to be in an area where Internet signal is possible/available, but so far (touch wood) we have not had connecting problems. Works a charm. Only problem is, with such an abundance of Terrabytes monthly, we minimally use the allocated portion on our cellphone contracts.

Fred, setup is easy just point it to the open sky no need for aligning with any particular satellite. While travelling in the car you attach it (in my case) with suction pads to the inside of the sunroof, internet all the time. You need to have the Starlink Mini for this, which is what I'm looking to get. So it's almost as portable as the mobile modem which I currently use. 

Yes my cellphone will still have a limited amount of data and airtime if needed.

Waiting until Jan sometime to compare costs to the Amazon Leo.

The moment Starlick is available in SA, I'll be a customer.  This is unlimmited unthrottled un controlled internet access anywhere in SA.

If you camp at Drie Berge near Brits NW, cellphone connection is a problem and this means internet is a problem because the resort is between three mountains.

And if you buy the proper System you do not need to set it up it does it by itself.

Even if you buy the smallest System, setting up is done by Connecting your phone and turning the "Dish" untill the dish and Satelite pictures allign with one another.

I think a 5 year old will be able to do it.

Dink ook Starlink is goeie oosie as mens baie remote kampeer. Ons behoeftes is nog nie so ver nie....oral waar ons kom is darem nog sein gewees. Die plek waar ons relatief gesukkel het met sein was in die wildtuin....veral Lower Sabie. Maar lyk of dit nou opgelos is, want met afgelope besoek het ons geen probleem gehad met sein nie. Kampe se wifi maak dit seker ook beter as addisionele opsie....gesien by Skukuza en Satara, maar weet nie hoeveel kos hul pakkette nie. 

Ons was onlangs met n bootjie uit by Ballito en was amper 6km in see gewees.....was verbaas gewees hoe sterk opvangs nog daar diep was

Ons het so ver reg gekom met cell foon sein of kamp wifi. Ons het dus nie ń behoefte vir LEO internet nie.

Die cell foon internet prioritiseer DSTV en Netflix. So hy haak omtrent nie.

We have been at home for the last 2 weeks and already just watching F1;Rugby; and one episode of a a Netflix series we have already over 90Gb for this month. When we get to 100Gb we will be throttled to 4Mbps. When we get to 150Gb the it will be throttled to 2Mbps. If we cross 200Gb then throttled to 512kbps which is useless to watch live sport etc. Then I ave not even updated any software on the phones or laptops. 

That is where Starlink will be worth it for me, no throttling and uncapped. Absolutely no restrictions @ R677/m - no contract you can pause stop start when ever you want.

Mense se behoeftes verskil en hulle begrotings ook.  Ek moet maar my sente tel so onnodige uitgawes of 'nice to haves' vermy ek maar.  Maar ek is nie 'n sport volgeling nie so ek het nie vinnige data nodig nie en dit gaan nie 'n krisis wees as ek tydelik nie goeie ontvangs het nie. 

Ons het onlangs op'n plek gekamp waar daar nie ontvangs in die kamp was nie.  Ons kon darem 'n ent teen 'n heuwel op loop om dringende kommunmijasie te kry en ander belangrike werk kon ons op die naaste dorp doen waar goeie ontvangs was.  

So 'n situasie gebeur egter maar selde en ek kan nie eers onthou wanneer dit laas gebeur het nie, so om selfs R677 per maand te spandeer om daardie onwaarskynlike toeval te dek, sal nie vir my  'n noodsaaklikheid wees nie.  As Starlink jou instaat stel om net te betaal vir die maand wanneer jy dit nodig het, kan dit werk maar om agt duisend rand per jaar te betaal om dit dalk een maal vir 'n paar dae te benut klink vir my soos 'n vermorsing van my geld.  My totale kommunmikasiepakket kos maar nege duisend per jaar en ek het elke maand 'n groot deel wat ek nie gebruik nie.

At home we have uncapped fibre 40Mb / 40Mb. I have thought of changing it to prepaid but I get a subsidy for life on my month to month connection. That will then fall away.

Brians method with LEO as your only service provider is the best option. You can then take your Internet connection anywhere on earth.

But it is so far only a promise for SA.
